The flavonoid rutin is recognized as playing an important role in the protection of plants against lepidopterans. Bioassays with this compound are generally carried out using artificial diets. Proteins of high energy value, such as casein, are important ingredients of insect artificial diets as a source of essential amino acids. However, such proteins can generally increase the allelochemical activity. Our objective was to evaluate the effects of rutin on larvae of the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner by incorporating this allelochemical into diets with different concentrations of casein. Three casein concentrations (0, 7 g, or 14 g) combined with none, 0.65%, or 1.30% of rutin were added to the rearing diet and offered to the larvae from hatching to pupation. Rutin negatively affected larval development, the amount of food consumed, and pupal weight of A. gemmatalis. These negative effects were clearly seen in insects fed on diets with 7 g of casein to which any concentration of rutin was added. The effects of rutin when added to the diets without casein were stronger than in diets containing a suitable amount of casein (14 g). The greater negative effects of rutin in diets containing suboptimal concentrations of casein indicate that casein can increase the effects of rutin only when the diets are nutritionally unsuitable for insect development.

The velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner attacks peanut leaves, and the use of resistant varieties has directly contributed to ecological and economic aspects of pest control. The aim of this work was to select resistant peanut genotypes to A. gemmatalis using cluster analyses (dendogram obtained by Ward's methods and K-means) and Principal Components analysis for data interpretation. The evaluated genotypes were: IAC 5, IAC 8112, IAC 22 and IAC Tatu ST with upright growth habit, and IAC 147, IAC 125, IAC Caiapó and IAC Runner 886 with runner growth habit, and soybean genotype BR 16 as a susceptible control. The biological parameters: leaf consumption, larval (4º instar) and pupal (24h old) weight, larval and pupal development time and adult longevity were evaluated at laboratory conditions. The genotypes IAC 147 and IAC Runner 886 were resistant to A. gemmatalis in both cluster tests, grouping apart from most of the other genotypes. Both dendrogram and K-means methods provided satisfactory biological explanation, and they can be complementary used together with Principal Component and vice-versa. These results suggest that cluster analyses may be an important statistical tool in the selection of host plant resistance.

This work was conducted to evaluate biological parameters of Plutella xylostella L. reared on leaves of several cauliflower genotypes under laboratory conditions. The experiment was set in a randomized block design and arranged in a 6 x 2 factorial (genotypes x generations). Leaf disks of the cultivars Barcelona, Verona, Piracicaba Precoce, Sharon, Silver Streak, and Teresópolis Gigante were placed in Petri dishes with 12 newly-hatched larvae. Leaf disks were initially changed after the fourth day, but daily afterwards until the larvae reached the pupal stage. The same procedure was adopted for the second generation. Twenty adults of each sex were separated from each genotype to evaluate their longevity, and 10 couples from each treatment were used to assess female fecundity. The lowest larval survival was obtained on the 'Silver Streak' (78.9%) and highest on 'Verona' (97.1%). The 'Silver Streak' and 'Teresópolis Gigante' showed the lowest pupal weights (4.83 mg and 5.11 mg, respectively), as well as the lowest fecundity, 119.4 and 123.0 eggs/female, respectively, while 'Piracicaba Precoce' the highest (167.7 eggs/female). Males obtained from larvae reared on 'Teresópolis Gigante' and 'Silver Streak' lived shorter (5.1 days), while the short-lived females were obtained from larvae reared on 'Barcelona' and 'Verona' (4.9 and 5.0 days). Insect development was prolonged in the second generation in all tested genotypes.

We describe the new association of Hexacladia smithii (Ashmead) parasitizing two passion fruit bugs, Holhymenia histrio (Fabricius) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae), in Brazil.

A divergência genética de 16 cultivares de arroz quanto à resistência ao percevejo-do-colmo-do-arroz, Tibraca limbativentris Stål, foi avaliada por meio de técnicas de análise multivariada. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com oito repetições. Na avaliação foram considerados oito caracteres de resistência ao ataque do inseto. A divergência genética foi avaliada por procedimentos multivariados: distância generalizada de Mahalanobis (D²), método de agrupamento de otimização de Tocher e técnica de variáveis canônicas. As cultivares mais dissimilares foram Bico Ganga e Marabá Branco, enquanto Agulha e Branco Tardão foram as mais similares. Foram formados cinco grupos pelo método de otimização de Tocher. As três primeiras variáveis canônicas explicaram 88,5% da variabilidade total disponível. Conclui-se que as técnicas de análise multivariada são eficientes para a análise da divergência genética entre as cultivares de arroz, com destaque para Marabá Branco e Bico Ganga, consideradas as mais promissoras a serem utilizadas em futuros cruzamentos para melhoramento visando resistência ao percevejo-do-colmo-do-arroz.

The genetic divergence of sixteen rice cultivars regarding their resistance to the rice stem bug, Tibraca limbativentris Stål, was estimated by multivariate analysis techniques. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse, in randomized block design with eight replications. Eight plant resistance related traits were evaluated. Genetic divergence was evaluated by multivariate procedures: generalized Mahalanobis (D²) distance, the Tocher's grouping optimization method and canonical variables. The most dissimilar cultivars were Bico Ganga and Marabá Branco, while Agulha and Branco Tardão were the most similar. Five clusters were formed by the Tocher's optimization method. Three canonic variables explained 88.5% of the observed variation. We concluded that the multivariate analysis techniques are suitable for analyzing the genetic divergence among rice cultivars, indicating Bico Ganga and Marabá Branco as the most promising for future breeding programs of resistance to the rice stem bug.

Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento de oviposição da mosca-branca Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B em relação à posição da folha, à idade da planta e à densidade de adultos na cultura do algodoeiro. Utilizou-se o genótipo IAC 22 para realização dos testes. Nos testes com chance de escolha, plantas com 20, 30 e 40 dias de idade foram utilizadas para avaliar os efeitos da idade da planta e plantas com 40 dias para estudar a distribuição de ovos na planta e no limbo foliar. Naquele sem chance de escolha, utilizaram-se plantas com 20 dias de idade para avaliar as densidades de 50, 100 e 150 adultos por planta. Com base nos resultados, as áreas dos lóbulos do limbo foliar e as folhas apicais foram preferidas para postura e, portanto, as mais adequadas para as amostragens de ovos de mosca-branca em plantas de algodoeiro. Plantas com 20 dias de idade foram as preferidas para a oviposição e, nas densidades de 100 e 150 adultos por planta foi encontrado número suficiente de ovos para discriminar genótipos de algodoeiro com diferentes graus de resistência à mosca-branca.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the oviposition behavior of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B in relation to leaf position, plant age, and adult density on cotton plants. The genotype IAC 22 was used to do the tests. In free-choice tests, 20, 30 and 40 day-old plants were used to evaluate age efects and 40 day-old plants to study egg distribution in the plant and on the leaf surface. In a no-choice test, 20 day-old plants were used to evaluate densities of 50, 100 and 150 adults per plant. The lobe areas on the leaf surface and apical leaves were preferred for whitefly egg laying and therefore more suitable for egg sampling in cotton plants. The 20 day-old plants were preferred for oviposition, and the densities of 100 and 150 adults per plant ensured the number of eggs enough to discriminate cotton genotypes with different whitefly resistance degrees.

A amostragem seqüencial (presença-ausência) vem sendo utilizada no manejo integrado de pragas pela rapidez e eficiência, principalmente, para pragas que são difíceis de serem quantificadas. Para o manejo de Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B foi desenvolvido um plano de amostragem seqüencial, com base na presença ou ausência da praga em plantas de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), independente do seu número. Os experimentos foram conduzidos nas épocas de semeadura "das águas" (2000/01) e "da seca" (2002), em Jaboticabal - SP, utilizando-se área de 1 ha, subdividida em 100 parcelas iguais de 100 m² (10 x 10 m). Em cada parcela foram avaliadas 10 plantas ao acaso, considerando-se somente se a mosca-branca estava ou não presente. O nível de dano econômico adotado foi de 10% de infestação. A partir dos dados analisados, foram obtidas duas retas: uma superior (S1= 2,7095 + 0,1452n), a partir da qual recomenda-se o controle; e outra inferior (S0= -2,7095 + 0,1452n), até a qual o controle não é recomendado. Pelos resultados verifica-se que a amostragem seqüencial é eficiente na indicação ou não do controle da B. tabaci biótipo B na cultura do feijão.

Sequential sampling (presence-absence) has been used in integrated pest management because it is quick and efficient for pests that are difficult to quantify. For Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B management a sequential sampling plan was developed based on the presence or absence of the whitefly on common bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) regardless of the number. The experiments were carried out at the November (2000/01) and February (2002) sowings in Jaboticabal, SP, Brazil, using an area of 1 ha, subdivided into 100 (10 x 10 m) equal plots. Ten plants were assessed randomly in each plot, considering only whether the whitefly was present or not. The level of economic damage adopted was 10% infestation. From the analyzed data, two lines were obtained, one superior, from which control is recommended (S1= 2,7095 + 0,1452n) and another inferior, were control is not recommended (S0= -2,7095 + 0,1452n). From the results it was ascertained that sequential sampling is efficient in indicating, or not, control of B. tabaci biotype B in the common bean crop.

O estudo da distribuição espacial de pragas é fundamental para elaboração de planos de amostragem que possam propiciar maior adoção do manejo integrado de pragas. Para Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biótipo B em feijoeiro Phaseolus vulgaris L., foram conduzidos ensaios de campo em uma área de 10.000 m², dividida em 100 parcelas iguais de 10 x 10 m, nas épocas de semeadura "das águas" e "da seca". As amostragens foram realizadas semanalmente, em 10 plantas por parcela. Coletou-se um folíolo por planta e avaliou-se a presença-ausência de ninfas da mosca-branca na página abaxial. Para adultos, observou-se visualmente a presença-ausência da praga nas plantas. Em todas as amostragens obtiveram-se valores menores que a unidade para a relação variância/média, indicando disposição regular da mosca-branca no campo, confirmada pelos valores significativos da estatística <FONT FACE=Symbol>½</FONT>d<FONT FACE=Symbol>½</FONT>, do teste de afastamento da aleatoriedade, assim como pelos valores inferiores à unidade do índice de Morisita. A distribuição binomial positiva foi o modelo mais adequado para representar a distribuição espacial da B. tabaci biótipo B na cultura do feijão.

The study of spatial distribution of the insects is fundamental to elaborate sampling plans with potential for use in integrated pest management. Field experiments were carried out for Bemisa tabaci B biotype in common bean Phaseolus vulagaris L. in a 10,000 m² area, divided in 100 equal 10 x 10 m plots, at the November and February plantings. Ten plants per plot were sampled weekly. One foliole per plant was collected and the presence-absence of whitefly nymphs was assessed on the abaxial surface. For adults, the presence-absence of the pest was observed visually on the plants. In all the samplings lower values were obtained than the unit for the variance/mean relationship, indicating a regular placing of the whitefly in the field, which was confirmed by the significant values detected for the <FONT FACE=Symbol>½</FONT>d<FONT FACE=Symbol>½</FONT>statistic and by the values lower than the unit presented by the Morisita index. The positive binomial distribution was the most suitable to represent the spatial distribution of B. tabaci biotype B in the bean crop.

Avaliou-se a infestação, flutuação populacional e horário de visitação de Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) em espécies de maracujazeiro. As espécies utilizadas foram Passiflora coccinea, P. setacea, P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. laurifolia e P. nitida, aos três anos de idade. O ensaio foi conduzido em parcelas de 1,5 m de comprimento, avaliando-se os dois lados da espaldeira, considerando-se apenas o 0,5 m superior desta e totalizando, para os dois lados, a área de 1,5 m². Avaliaram-se os seguintes parâmetros: número de irapuás e porcentagem de dano nos botões florais, flores, frutos, ramos, folhas e pedúnculos. Para a determinação do horário de visitação, foi utilizada P. coccinea, sendo as avaliações realizadas às 9:00h, 12:00h e 15:00h. A correlação entre o número médio de T. spinipes presentes nas flores de espécies de maracujazeiro e a porcentagem de danos foi positiva e significativa (r = 0,99). Em nenhuma das observações efetuadas, constatou-se a presença de T. spinipes nos botões florais, frutos, ramos, folhas ou pedúnculos das espécies de maracujazeiro, não ocorrendo danos nessas estruturas. Esse resultado sugere que as abelhas são atraídas pelas flores ocasionando danos nessas estruturas, provavelmente, por utilizar o tecido floral ou resinas contidas neste para a construção de ninhos. P. coccinea foi a espécie mais danificada por T. spinipes, apresentando suscetibilidade ao ataque desse inseto. Os horários de maior incidência de T. spinipes foram 9:00h e 12:00h, ocorrendo decréscimo significativo no número de abelhas por flor às 15:00h. Constatou-se maior infestação de T. spinipes nas flores das plantas de maracujá nos meses de outubro a novembro, coincidindo com a primavera, em Jaboticabal, SP.

Trigona spinipes (Fabr.) (Hymenoptera: Apidae) infestation, seasonal fluctuation and flower visitation time were evaluated in the following three-year old passion fruit species: Passiflora coccinea, P. setacea, P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. laurifolia and P. nitida. The trial was conducted in 1.5 m long plots, in which only the top (0.5 m) of both sides of the plant lines were sampled, totaling 1.5 m² of plant area observed per plot. The following parameters were evaluated: number of T. spinipes and percentage of damage on flower-buds, fruits, branches, leaves and stalks. The visitation time of bees was determined in P. coccinea, and the evaluations were carried out at 9:00 AM, 12:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The correlation between the average number of T. spinipes in flowers of passion fruit species and percentage of damage was positive and significant (r = 0.99). The presence or damage of T. spinipes were not verified on flower-buds, fruits, branches, leaves or stalks of all passion fruit species. This result suggests that they are attracted to the flowers causing damage in those plant structures, probably because the bees use flower tissues or resins to build the nests. P. coccinea was the passion fruit species most damaged by T. spinipes, showing susceptibility to the insect attack. The times of highest incidence of T. spinipes were 9:00 AM and 12:00 AM, occurring significant decrease in number of bees at 03:00 PM. High infestation of T. spinipes was observed in passion fruit species from October to November, coinciding with the spring season in Jaboticabal, São Paulo State.

Objetivou-se estudar o desenvolvimento de Leptoglossus gonagra Fabr. (Heteroptera: Coreidae), em cinco espécies de maracujazeiro (Passiflora spp.), discriminando-as quanto aos tipos e graus de resistência. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em laboratório sob condições de 25 ± 1º C; 65 ± 10% UR e fotofase de 14 h, durante 1998, em Jaboticabal, SP. Foram utilizados ramos, botões florais, flores e frutos de P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. giberti, P. laurifolia e P. nitida. Avaliou-se a duração de cada ínstar, a mortalidade em cada ínstar e em toda fase ninfal, o peso de ninfas de terceiro e quinto ínstares com 24 h de idade, o peso de adultos com 24 h de idade e a longevidade. Utilizou-se o delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizado. Em todas as espécies, L. gonagra não completou seu desenvolvimento quando alimentado apenas com frutos. Os ramos, botões florais, flores e frutos de P. nitida apresentaram grau de antibiose mais elevado que os de P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa e P. giberti, enquanto P. laurifolia é a espécie mais adequada ao desenvolvimento de L. gonagra.

The development of Leptoglossus gonagra Fabr. (Heteroptera: Coreidae), feeding on different Passiflora genotypes was evaluated under 25 ± 1ºC; 65 ± 10% UR and 14 L:10 D, at the Department of Plant Protection, UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP, during 1998. P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa, P. giberti, P. laurifolia and P. nitida, were used in biological studies using branches, floral buttons, flowers and fruits and duration of each nymphal stadium, nymph weight of third and fifth stadium with 24 h of age, mortality per stadium and in all nymphal stages, adult weight, and longevity were determined. L. gonagra did not complete its development when fed only on fruits of P. alata, P. nitida, P. giberti, P. edulis f. flavicarpa and P. laurifolia. Branches, floral buttons, flowers and fruits of P. nitida showed higher levels of antibiosis than P. alata, P. edulis f. flavicarpa and P. giberti, and the last one presented a high level of non-preference for feeding, while P. laurifolia was the most adequate genotype for development of L. gonagra.

Visando observar a antibiose de frutos de diferentes genótipos de maracujazeiro (Passiflora spp.) frente ao percevejo Holhymenia histrio (Fabr.), realizaram-se ensaios na Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP. Foram acompanhadas diariamente ninfas recém-eclodidas em frutos de diferentes genótipos, avaliando-se a duração e a mortalidade de cada ínstar ninfal; o peso das ninfas de quarto ínstar; o peso de adultos e a fecundidade. Os frutos dos genótipos P. giberti, P. coccinea, P. alata e P. edulis f. flavicarpa apresentaram efeitos antibióticos sobre o percevejo H. histrio, com destaque para o primeiro deles, onde ocorreram altas mortalidades, sobretudo no segundo ínstar ninfal, indicando ser o menos adequado. Os frutos de P. nitida apresentaram-se como os mais adequados para o desenvolvimento das ninfas e adultos do percevejo.

Antibiosis was observed in fruits of different passion fruit genotypes (Passiflora spp.) on Holhymenia histrio Fabr. Essays were accomplished in the Department of Entomology and Nematology UNESP, Jaboticabal, SP. The development of newly-hatched nymphs on fruits of the different genotypes was studied. The duration and mortality of each nymphal instar, the weight of fourth-instar nymphs, the adults weight and fecundity were determined. The genotypes P. giberti, P. coccinea, P. alata and P. edulis f. flavicarpa presented antibiosis for the bugs H. histrio. P. giberti caused high mortality during the second instar, thus showing to be the less adequate. The fruits of P. nitida were most adequate for the development of the nymphs and adults of the bugs.

Com a finalidade de buscar meios alternativos para o controle de Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), este trabalho teve por objetivo, determinar os tipos de resistência envolvidos em genótipos de feijoeiro ao seu ataque. Foram realizados testes sem e com chance de escolha utilizando o delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizados, com quatro e cinco repetições, respectivamente, com amostras de 10g de grãos. Em teste sem chance de escolha foram amostrados os parâmetros número total de ovos, número de ovos viáveis, viabilidade de ovos, peso seco do alimento consumido, ciclo biológico de ovo a adulto, número e porcentagem de insetos emergidos, e peso e longevidade de fêmeas e machos. Para o teste com chance de escolha, avaliou-se o número de insetos atraídos pelos genótipos, número total de ovos e número de ovos por fêmea. Com os resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que o genótipo Preto 143 apresenta resistência do tipo não-preferência para oviposição em teste com chance de escolha; e, os genótipos 2374, 2395, 2174, 133 e 155, apresentaram resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação e/ou antibiose.

With the purpose of looking for alternative means for the control of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Bruchidae), that work had for objetive, to determine the resistance types involved in bean genotypes to its attack. It was realized no choice and free choice tests and the treatments were arranged in a completely randomized design with four and five replications, respectively, with samples of 10g of seeds. In no choice test was sampled the parameters total number of eggs, number of viable eggs, viability of eggs, dry wieght of the consumed food, biological cycle of egg to adult, number and percentage of emerged insects and weigth and longevity of females and males. For the free choice test, was evaluated the number of insects attract for the genotypes, total number of eggs and number of egg for female. With the obtained results, it can be concluded that the genotypes Preto 143 present resistance of the type nonpreference for oviposition in test free choice; and, the genotypes 2374, 2395, 2174, 133 and 155, present resistance of the type nonpreference for feeding and/or antibiosis.

Objetivou-se estudar em laboratório a biologia de Dione juno juno (Cramer), determinando-se os efeitos da densidade larval e da alimentação das larvas com folhas de nove genótipos de maracujazeiro. Foram analisados a duração, o peso e a viabilidade das fases larval e pupal e a longevidade dos adultos sem alimento. Verificou-se que a densidade de cinco lagartas por recipiente proporcionou melhor desenvolvimento do inseto do que uma e dez lagartas. Passiflora alata e P. setacea apresentaram resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação e/ou antibiose, enquanto o híbrido P. alata2 x P. macrocarpa apresentou não-preferência para alimentação, possivelmente associada à presença de compostos químicos com alto grau de repelência a D. juno juno ou a supressores de alimentação.

The biology of Dione juno juno (Cramer) was studied under laboratory conditions; the effects of larval density and of feeding the larvae on leaves of nine passion fruit genotypes were observed. The duration, weight and viability of the larval and pupal phases were analyzed, as well as the longevity of unfed adults. The density of five larvae/recipient provided the best development of the insects. Passiflora setacea presented feeding nonpreference and/or antibiosis while the hybrid P. alata2 x P. macrocarpa presented feeding nonpreference, possibly associated to the presence of chemical compounds with high degree of repellence to D. juno juno or to feeding suppressants.

A resistência de 30 genótipos de milho ao ataque de Sitophilus zeamais Mots. foi avaliada em teste sem chance de escolha, sendo efetuada uma seleção de 10 deles (M 9560, XHT 12, A 952, AG 5011, X 9557, Z 8452, C 615, C 435, DINA 888, C 606), os quais foram submetidos ao teste com chance de escolha, avaliando-se a atratividade e a preferência para oviposição. Pelos resultados concluiu-se que os genótipos menos atrativos foram Z 8452 (3,1%) e M 9560 (3,2%), enquanto o mais atrativo foi C 615 (24,7%). Os genótipos que apresentaram resistência do tipo não-preferência para oviposição foram A 952, M 9560 e XHT 12 com números médios de 2,0; 3,0 e 3,4 ovos por recipiente. A resistência do tipo não-preferência para alimentação e/ou antibiose foi observada nos genótipos M 9560, A 952 e Z 8452. Os genótipos com alta suscetibilidade ao gorgulho foram C 435, C 444, C 606 e AG 8010.

As result of preliminary tests, free choice tests were carried out with 10 corn genotypes selected (M 9560, XHT 12, A 952, AG 5011, X 9557, Z 8452, C 615, C 435, DINA 888, C 606) to evaluate the attractiveness and preference for oviposition. The corn genotypes Z 8452 (3.1%) and M 9560 (3.2%) were the less attractive while C 615 (24.7%) was the most attractive. Nonpreference for oviposition was observed for A 952, M 9560 and XHT 12 genotypes with mean number of 2.0, 3.0 and 3.4 eggs per container. M 9560, A 952 and Z 8452 genotypes showed feeding nonpreference and/or antibiosis type resistance. The genotypes C 435, C 444, C 606 and AG 8010, were highly susceptible.

Verificou-se a influência de duas variedades de cana-de-açúcar (Saccharum spp.), incorparados em dieta artificial, na forma de colmos triturados, no desenvolvimento de Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) e no parasitismo de Cotesia flavipes (Cam.). A variedade SP71-1081 foi menos adequada ao desenvolvimento de D. saccharalis comparada à SP71-3146, aumentando os períodos larval e pupal (dias) e, diminuindo o peso larval; não houve diferenças para as viabilidades larval e pupal e peso de pupa. Lagartas oriundas das dietas artificiais e lagartas alojadas no interior dos toletes das variedades de cana, foram igualmente parasitadas por C. flavipes. Lagartas criadas em dieta artificial contendo colmos triturados das variedades testadas, promoveram desenvolvimento semelhante de C. flavipes. A percentagem de parasitismo foi semelhante nas larvas criadas em dietas artificiais contendo colmos das variedades SP 71 - 1081 (84,0%) e SP 71-3146 (81,3%).

In this study it was observed the influence of two sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) varieties, that were included in an artificial diet as powdered stem, on development of Diatraea saccharalis (Fabr.) and parasistism by Cotesia flavipes (Cam.). The variety SP71 - 1081 was less suitable (P ≤ 0.05) to D. saccharalis development than SP 71-3146, delaying larval and pupal period and decreasing larval weight; no significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed for larval and pupal survival as well as pupal weight. D. saccharalis larvae reared on artificial diet and on sugarcane stem were equally preferred by the parasitoid C. flavipes. Larvae reared on artificial diet with powdered stem of the tested varieties promoted a similar development of C. flavipes. The percent of parasitism in the larvae reared in artificials diets contention of the SP 71-1081 (84.0%) and SP 71-3146 (81.3%) varieties were similar.
